Chapter 2 - The Uncle's Promise

Standing a few feet away from the grand dining table was Michael.
He was Marcus’s younger brother. Mid-thirties, with dark, slightly messy hair, wearing a sharp black suit with an open-collared white shirt. He wasn't like Marcus. Michael was a successful, fiercely protective man who had always felt a deep, unspoken unease about how his brother treated the little girl.
Michael didn't ignore Sophia's tears.
He immediately stepped away from the table, completely turning his back on his brother and sister-in-law. He walked over to Sophia and knelt down on the expensive Persian rug, bringing himself right to her eye level.
Sophia looked up at him, her small chest heaving as she tried to hold back her sobs.
“Would you believe me?” Sophia whispered to him, her voice heartbreakingly fragile.
Michael’s dark eyes locked onto his niece. He saw the genuine, agonizing pain in her small face. His expression shifted from quiet horror to a restrained, unyielding cinematic determination.
“Always,” Michael answered softly.
Michael gently reached out, placing his hands on her waist to help lift her into the tall dining chair.
As his fingers grazed the right side of her ribs beneath the red velvet dress, Sophia gasped, flinching violently in pain.
Michael froze. He didn't lift her. Very carefully, he pressed two fingers against the side of her ribcage. He felt a sharp, unnatural bump under the fabric.
