Chapter 4 - The Quiet Surrender

The spasm completely ended.
Dominic fell back into the heavy black metal chair, completely exhausted, his white dress shirt clinging to his sweating chest. He opened his dark eyes and looked down at the young maid still kneeling amidst the broken porcelain and spilled food.
The cinematic realism of the moment was heavy and profound. The terrifying mafia boss looked at the penniless girl with a breathtaking mix of shock, confusion, and quiet surrender.
"You aren't afraid," Dominic whispered, his voice completely stripped of its lethal edge, replaced by genuine amazement.
"I've seen worse things than a broken plate, Mr. Moretti," Fay replied smoothly. She slowly stood up from the floor, brushing a piece of scrambled egg off her stained white apron. "I'll get a broom for the mess. Your physical therapist arrives in twenty minutes."
Dominic watched her walk toward the heavy bedroom door. "I fired the therapist yesterday."
Fay stopped in the doorway. She turned around, her expression perfectly composed.
"Then I suggest you hire him back," Fay stated, completely ignoring the bodyguard standing right next to her. "Because throwing your breakfast on the floor isn't going to make you walk again. Only the work will."
The older housekeeper gasped audibly, covering her mouth in sheer horror at the maid's audacity. No one ever spoke to the boss like that and lived.
