Chapter 1 - The Barefoot Guide

On the exact night Preston Hale was scheduled to officially announce his engagement to the city's most elite socialite, a three-year-old girl grabbed his hand, pulled him into the shadows, and completely shattered his reality.

Lucia shouldn’t have known how to stay that quiet. At her age, children were supposed to run down hallways, shriek with laughter, and treat every secret like a game. But Lucia didn't make a sound. She walked barefoot across the freezing marble floors of the Buckhead estate, clutching a ragged stuffed rabbit to her chest, glancing back every few steps to make sure the towering CEO was still following her.

“Shh... come on, Mr. Preston,” Lucia whispered, her massive brown eyes wide with genuine terror.

He obeyed.

Preston was forty-two. He ran a multi-million-dollar hotel empire spanning Atlanta, Savannah, and Charleston. He had watched rival executives physically tremble in boardrooms at the mere mention of his name. Yet, that afternoon, the apex predator of the hospitality industry was crouching behind a cracked mahogany door, following a child who barely reached his knee.

Through the crack in the door, Preston could see inside his elderly mother’s private suite.

Standing in the center of the room was Vanessa Pierce, the stunning, flawless woman Preston was supposed to marry in three hours. Standing opposite her was Rosa, Lucia’s mother, the quiet, dedicated housekeeper who had worked for the Hale family for six loyal years.

“Tonight you’re going to say, in front of Preston, that Eleanor specifically asked you to keep me close to her,” Vanessa ordered, her voice cold and commanding. “You’ll say she trusts me implicitly and wants me to manage her medical care.”

Rosa clutched a linen pillowcase tightly to her chest, her hands trembling violently.

“I can’t say that, Miss Vanessa,” Rosa whispered, tears welling in her eyes. “Mrs. Hale has never said it. She is terrified of you.”

👉 Preston felt his blood turn to absolute ice, but Vanessa’s next sentence would completely paralyze him.
