Chapter 6 - The Grand Announcement
The string quartet playing in the corner of the ballroom abruptly stopped.
Preston walked to the center of the room, picking up a silver spoon and gently tapping his crystal champagne flute. The sharp, clear ringing sound instantly commanded the attention of the fifty wealthy guests.
Vanessa’s eyes lit up with sheer, triumphant greed. She gracefully walked over to stand right beside him, completely expecting him to pull out the massive, three-million-dollar diamond ring they had looked at last week.
“Thank you all for being here tonight,” Preston began, his voice echoing smoothly through the opulent ballroom. “I invited the most important people in Atlanta here to make a very special announcement regarding the future of the Hale family and my corporate empire.”
Vanessa beamed, reaching out to gently rest her manicured hand on his chest.
Preston didn't pull away. He looked directly at the crowd of investors, mayors, and socialites.
“For the past three months, Vanessa has taken a very active role in managing my mother's private medical care,” Preston announced.
The guests offered a warm, polite murmur of approval.
“In fact,” Preston continued, his voice dropping into a lethal, cinematic calmness. “She took such an active role that she fired the licensed medical board, hired an unlicensed criminal, and began heavily sedating my mother to fake the progression of dementia.”

The polite murmurs instantly vanished. A collective, suffocating gasp sucked the oxygen completely out of the room.
