Chapter 7 - The Cornered Rat

All the color violently drained from Vanessa’s perfectly contoured face. She physically staggered backward, her emerald green dress suddenly feeling incredibly heavy.
“Preston... what... what are you talking about?!” Vanessa shrieked, her voice cracking with pure, unadulterated panic. She looked wildly at the staring crowd, desperately trying to save face. “He’s making a terrible joke! Darling, stop it!”
“I’m not joking, Vanessa,” Preston stated coldly, completely devoid of human mercy.
He snapped his fingers.
The heavy mahogany double doors of the ballroom swung open. Marching into the room were six heavily armed, uniformed police officers, led directly by Warren, Preston's head of security.
“Warren has already handed the financial ledgers, the offshore wire transfers, and the illegal medical contracts directly to the district attorney,” Preston announced loudly, ensuring every single CEO and politician in the room heard the exact details of her crimes.
“No! No, it’s a lie!” Vanessa wailed hysterically, tears of pure, humiliating terror ruining her expensive makeup. “Rosa! Rosa is lying to you! The housekeeper is trying to frame me!”
Preston’s jaw locked. The dark, terrifying anger he had been suppressing for three hours finally bled into his eyes.
“Rosa didn't tell me a single thing,” Preston growled aggressively, stepping directly into Vanessa’s personal space. “Because you threatened to have her three-year-old daughter murdered in my pool if she spoke.”
