Chapter 4 - The Golden Facade

That night, the grand ballroom of the Hale estate was a masterpiece of breathtaking wealth. Crystal chandeliers glowed warmly over fifty of Atlanta's most elite politicians, hotel magnates, and high-society investors.

Preston walked down the sweeping mahogany staircase as if absolutely nothing had happened. He wore a flawless, tailored black tuxedo, projecting the image of a perfectly happy, powerful man.

Vanessa appeared at the bottom of the stairs. She was glowing in a stunning, custom-made emerald green silk dress, dripping in diamonds that Preston had purchased for her. She offered him a radiant, camera-ready smile and leaned in to kiss his cheek.

“You look incredibly handsome tonight, darling,” Vanessa purred, her voice dripping with artificial sweetness. “Are you ready to make the announcement?”

“I’ve never been more ready,” Preston smiled back, the cold, dead look in his eyes completely masked by his practiced charm.

They mingled with the guests. Vanessa played the role of the devoted, loving future wife perfectly. She charmed the investors, she laughed at the mayor's jokes, and she constantly touched Preston's arm to establish her dominance over his wealth.

Minutes later, Preston’s phone buzzed in his tuxedo pocket.

He stepped away from the crowd, sliding the phone out. It was a secure text from Warren.
