Chapter 8 - The Handcuffs

“You can't prove that!” Vanessa screamed, backing away frantically toward the grand staircase. “It’s hearsay! I am your fiancé! You can't do this to me!”

“You are a parasite,” Preston corrected, his voice vibrating with absolute, undeniable authority. “And I can prove it. Because the security cameras hidden in my mother's suite recorded every single second of your demonic little threat this afternoon.”

Vanessa’s knees physically buckled. She collapsed onto the marble floor, her expensive green silk dress pooling around her like toxic sludge.

The two lead police officers immediately stepped forward. They violently grabbed her arms, hauling the thrashing, weeping socialite back to her feet. The heavy steel handcuffs clicked shut with a loud, satisfying, and irreversible snap.

“Vanessa Pierce,” the officer stated firmly. “You are under arrest for grand larceny, wire fraud, extortion, child endangerment, and the attempted murder of Eleanor Hale.”

“Preston, please!” Vanessa sobbed, completely abandoning her arrogant persona, weeping pathetically in front of the entire city's elite. “I love you! I just wanted to secure our future! Don't let them take me!”

Preston stared at her with an expression so incredibly cold it could have frozen the sun.

“Take the trash out of my house,” Preston commanded the officers.
