Chapter 10 - The Vow of Protection

Vincent looked at his eight-year-old son. Matteo’s eyes were wide, but the absolute terror had faded, replaced by a profound, overwhelming relief. His father had saved him.

Vincent reached out with a trembling hand, gently cupping Matteo’s cheek.

"You're safe, my brave boy," Vincent whispered, a single tear slipping down his rugged, stubbled face. "I'm so sorry I didn't know. He will never, ever hurt you again."

Matteo leaned into his father's large, warm hand. "I missed you, Dad," the boy whispered, his natural voice finally returning to the world.

Vincent pulled his son into a desperate, crushing hug, burying his face in the boy’s soft blue shirt. For the first time in a year, the heavy, suffocating grief that had plagued the Rossi family finally began to lift. The truth was out. The traitor was gone.

Vincent slowly pulled back and looked up at Clara.

The beautiful caretaker reached into her pocket and silently handed him the tiny, charred memory card. It was the final piece of his wife's legacy, the ultimate proof that would allow Vincent to tear down every single cartel that had conspired against his family.

"Thank you, Clara," Vincent said, his voice thick with a level of respect he had never offered anyone else in his entire life. "You didn't just protect my son today. You saved our entire family. Whatever you want, you have it."

Clara smiled, a subtle, genuine expression. "I just want to finish his therapy, Mr. Rossi. He still has choices to make."

Vincent nodded, a fierce, unbreakable bond now forged between them.

If you were Clara, would you have stayed to protect the boy, or would you have run out the door the moment you saw the gun?
