Chapter 6 - The Race Against Death

On camera four, Leo finally pulled his ear away from the heavy mahogany door. The traitor’s face was twisted into a cold, ruthless sneer. He raised the silenced pistol, his thumb smoothly clicking the safety off. He gripped the brass doorknob.

He was going to walk in, put a bullet in the new caretaker’s head, execute the paralyzed boy in his wheelchair, and burn the memory card.

"Move," Vincent snarled.

It wasn't a yell. It was a dark, guttural command of pure, unfiltered violence. Vincent drew his own weapon, a heavy, customized 1911, from his shoulder holster.

He and Dominic exploded out of the underground surveillance room. They didn't take the main stairs. They sprinted up the hidden servant stairwell, their polished leather shoes flying over the concrete steps. Vincent’s mind was a blinding storm of rage and terror. He had failed to protect his wife. He would absolutely not fail to protect his son.

Back in the bedroom, Clara heard the subtle, heavy metallic click of the doorknob turning.

Her survival instincts flared. She snatched the memory card and shoved it deep into her own pocket. Without a single second of hesitation, Clara threw her body completely over Matteo’s wheelchair, shielding the fragile boy with her own back just as the heavy door swung open.
