Chapter 5 - The Bloody Relic

Inside the bedroom, completely unaware of the lethal weapon waiting on the other side of the door, Clara moved with quiet, terrifying urgency.

Following Matteo’s frantic pointing, she opened the bottom drawer of his custom oak bedside table. She reached all the way to the back, her fingers brushing past heavily guarded innocent toys, until she pulled out a small, charred piece of fabric.

She placed it gently on Matteo’s lap.

With trembling fingers, the eight-year-old boy unfolded the burnt cloth. Inside lay a tiny, slightly damaged digital memory card.

Vincent watched the screen, his breathing completely stopping. He recognized the fabric. It was a piece of the silk scarf his wife had been wearing the day she died.

"Mom gave it to me," Matteo whispered. This time, he was slightly louder, and the surveillance microphone caught the broken, heartbreaking sound of his voice. "She slid it into my pocket right before the car exploded. She said Uncle Leo was bad."

In the surveillance room, the silence was absolutely deafening.

Vincent froze. The pieces of the catastrophic puzzle violently slammed into place. It hadn't been a rival cartel that planted the car bomb a year ago. It was an inside job. Leo had murdered Vincent’s wife and paralyzed his son to try and seize control of the Chicago empire. And Leo had been living in this house, eating at their table, for an entire year, completely unaware that the paralyzed boy had the ultimate proof.

Until today. Leo must have realized the boy was finally going to speak.
