Chapter 1 - The Black Lacquered Box

The grand luxury ballroom was a masterpiece of intimidating wealth and cinematic elegance. Heavy, dark red velvet curtains framed the towering windows, and warm ambient lighting cascaded down from massive crystal chandeliers. Two hundred of the city’s most elite, high-society attendees stood in their expensive formal wear, holding champagne flutes and speaking in hushed, respectful tones.

At the very center of the room stood Dante.

The forty-two-year-old mafia boss radiated a calm but absolutely lethal authority. He wore a dark, unbuttoned dress shirt that exposed a glimpse of his heavy chest tattoos. Tonight was the ten-year anniversary of his syndicate’s absolute rule over the city, and the centerpiece of the celebration was resting on the pristine white tablecloth directly in front of him.

It was a stunning, black lacquered wooden gift box, tied perfectly with a thick, dark red silk ribbon.

The entire ballroom fell completely silent as Dante reached out his large, scarred hands to untie the ribbon. It was a gift from his inner circle, meant to symbolize loyalty and power.

But before his fingers could even graze the silk, a sudden, frantic blur of color darted out from underneath the long velvet tablecloth.

It was tiny Sophie. The five-year-old daughter of the estate’s head maid stood trembling in the center of the dangerous room. She was wearing an oversized yellow dress, hastily pinned at the shoulders to fit her small frame.

She threw her tiny arms out, desperately placing herself between the towering, terrifying mafia boss and the gift table.

👉 Dante’s hands stopped in mid-air, but the true nightmare of the evening was just beginning to unfold.
