Chapter 4 - The Dead Man's Sweat

A tight, cinematic close-up focused entirely on Dante’s face.
The gentle, patient expression he had shown to little Sophie instantly evaporated. The warmth vanished from his dark eyes, violently replaced by a cold, terrifying realization as he fully processed the absolute magnitude of the betrayal.
Marcus had been with him for fifteen years. They had bled together to build this empire. But recently, Marcus had developed a crippling, secret gambling addiction. He owed millions to a rival cartel, and the only way to clear his debt was to assassinate Dante and hand over the Chicago territory.
Dante didn't look at the explosive box. He slowly stood up to his full, towering height.
As he rose, he didn't step away from the danger. Instead, he instinctively shifted his massive body, placing his leg completely in front of little Sophie, physically shielding the child in the yellow dress from the deadly explosive and the armed traitor across the room.
His posture shifted flawlessly from a gentle uncle into the ruthless, terrifying mob boss who ruled the underworld.
"Go find your mama," Dante commanded Sophie. His voice was incredibly calm, but it carried an absolute, protective authority that left no room for hesitation.
Sophie didn't look back. She turned and ran quickly toward the kitchen service doors, completely disappearing to safety.
