Chapter 1 - The Scavenger in the Shadows

“Daddy, please don’t hit me! I promise I was only trying to eat the food they threw away!”
Those terrifying words came from my eight-year-old daughter, Chloe, as I found her digging frantically through a trash can behind a catering tent during my mother’s lavish 70th birthday celebration.
My name is Richard Sterling. I own a successful real estate development company in Chicago, and until that exact moment, I had genuinely believed I was doing everything a good father should do. Every single month, without fail, I transferred $10,000 into a designated trust account to cover my daughter’s living expenses and care.
So when I crouched down on the damp, freezing pavement and saw Chloe holding a half-eaten chicken bone in her tiny, shaking hands, it felt as though the earth had violently opened up beneath me.
“Sweetheart, what are you doing out here?” I asked, kneeling beside her, my voice trembling with shock.
Chloe immediately flinched. She quickly hid the chicken bone behind her back, squeezing her eyes shut as if she had been caught committing a terrible crime.
“I’m sorry, Daddy,” she whispered, her fragile body shivering. “Grandma said I already ate dinner, but my tummy still hurts because it’s empty. I didn’t mean to be bad.”
Something inside my chest physically broke.
She was wearing a faded pink winter coat I recognized immediately. I had bought it for her over two years ago. It was filthy, torn along the seams, and much too small for her growing body. Her shoes had holes worn straight through the soles, and her pale cheeks were so sunken that I could barely recognize the lively little girl I occasionally saw during brief, heavily monitored FaceTime calls.

I scooped my starving daughter into my arms, holding her tightly against my chest until she began sobbing quietly into my neck. Then, fueled by a blinding, lethal fury, I turned around and marched straight into the grand ballroom of the Drake Hotel.
