Chapter 4 - The Financial Freeze

“Marcus,” I said smoothly into the phone, my dark eyes locked entirely on my sweating, panicked mother.
“Yes, Richard?” my attorney answered instantly.
“I need you to contact the federal fraud division immediately,” I ordered. “Freeze every single bank account, trust fund, and credit line associated with Beatrice Sterling. I want a complete, forensic audit of the last thirty-six months of transfers to Elena Morales's account. And dispatch a private security team to the Drake Hotel. I want my mother removed from this property.”
“Richard, you can't do this to me! I am your mother!” Beatrice shrieked like a banshee, completely dropping her elegant facade.
“You are a monster,” I replied coldly.
I turned my back on her, carrying my daughter out of the grand ballroom. Behind me, the lavish 70th birthday party violently imploded. Guests rushed for the exits, wanting absolutely nothing to do with a woman about to be indicted for child abuse.
I placed Chloe gently into the back of my heated SUV. I wrapped my expensive wool trench coat around her freezing, fragile shoulders.
“Daddy’s got you,” I wept, tears finally falling down my face as I kissed her forehead. “You are never going back to that house again.”
But as I watched Chloe devour a warm meal at a luxury hotel later that night, a dark, agonizing question burned in my mind.
I had divorced Elena three years ago because my mother had presented me with undeniable "proof" that Elena was cheating on me and embezzling from my company. I had kicked her out and taken full custody.
