Chapter 2 - The Ballroom Confrontation

The grand ballroom was a blinding display of wealth. Prominent property developers, local politicians, and wealthy socialites filled the elegant room, surrounded by extravagant white floral arrangements and sparkling crystal decor.

At the center of it all stood my mother, Beatrice. She wore a luxurious burgundy silk gown, and resting against her collarbone was a massive diamond-and-emerald necklace worth more than a suburban house. She was laughing, holding a glass of expensive champagne, absolutely bathing in the attention.

But the instant she noticed me marching toward her with a filthy, sobbing child in my arms, her polished smile completely vanished.

“Richard, what on earth do you think you’re doing?” Beatrice hissed under her breath, quickly stepping forward to block me from the other guests. “Get her out of here! She’s filthy!”

I didn't stop. I walked directly to the head table.

The jazz band faltered and fell completely silent. Conversations evaporated throughout the massive ballroom as hundreds of elite guests turned their heads to watch us.

I looked my mother straight in the eyes, my voice booming across the silent room with absolute, terrifying authority.

“Mom, I have one very simple question for you,” I demanded. “Where is the ten thousand dollars I transfer to you every single month for my daughter’s care?”

All the color drained from Beatrice’s face. The wealthy guests exchanged wide-eyed, horrified glances.

“Richard, keep your voice down! You are embarrassing me!” Beatrice panicked, reaching out to grab Chloe’s arm.
