Chapter 9 - The Downfall

Two federal agents and a local police detective marched into the room, holding a thick stack of warrants.

“Beatrice Sterling,” the lead detective announced, stepping in front of the doors to block her escape. “You are under arrest for thirty-six counts of wire fraud, identity theft, grand larceny, and felony child endangerment.”

Beatrice let out a horrific, guttural scream of pure terror.

“No! Richard, stop them!” she sobbed hysterically, dropping to her knees in her heavy fur coat. “I am your mother! I gave you life! You owe me! I just wanted the lifestyle I deserved!”

“You forced my eight-year-old daughter to sleep in a freezing shed while you bought diamonds with her food money,” I replied coldly, rising from my desk. “You deserve nothing but a concrete box.”

The agents hauled her to her feet, violently pulling her arms behind her back. The cold steel handcuffs clicked loudly, echoing in the luxurious office.

Beatrice kicked and screamed, her perfect hair falling into a messy, pathetic tangle as she was dragged out of the building. The entire corporate staff watched in silence as the woman who had terrorized them for years was hauled away in absolute disgrace.

I turned back to the sofa. Chloe was hugging Elena tightly, watching the monster leave their lives forever.
