Chapter 8 - The Admiral's Shadow

As Sarah held her son, the heavy wooden doors at the back of the gymnasium swung open.
The quiet chatter that had started to build in the room instantly died. Stepping out from the shadows of the VIP viewing area was Rear Admiral Thomas Vance. He was the base commander, a man with silver hair and an aura of absolute, crushing authority, wearing a heavily decorated dress uniform.
He had been standing in the back of the room for the last ten minutes. He had witnessed the entire, disgusting display of Lieutenant Wyler’s arrogance.
Admiral Vance marched directly down the center aisle of the wooden bleachers, his polished shoes echoing like hammer strikes against the floor.
Wyler’s jaw literally dropped. He physically staggered backward, his heart stopping in his chest. "Admiral Vance... sir, I can explain!"
"Do not speak, Lieutenant," Admiral Vance commanded, his voice freezing the air in the gymnasium.
The Admiral stopped right next to Chief Hayes, completely ignoring the trembling junior officer. He turned his attention to Sarah, who had stood up, holding Matty's hand securely in her own. The Admiral delivered a sharp, flawless salute to the EOD Commander, a massive sign of public, undeniable respect.
Sarah returned the salute with perfect military discipline.
