Chapter 2 - The Mother-in-Law's Smirk

The cinematic tension in the grand banquet room spiked to a paralyzing level.

Sitting directly across from Claire was Diane, Ethan’s incredibly wealthy, notoriously cruel mother. Wearing a heavily beaded formal evening dress, Diane leaned forward over the crystal glasses, fixing Claire with a highly condescending, fake sympathetic smile.

"Don't take it to heart, dear," Diane said softly, though loud enough for the neighboring guests to hear every toxic syllable. "Marriage can be unpredictable. And given your... modest background, Ethan simply has to protect his assets. Surely you understand you bring nothing to the table."

Claire didn't flinch. Her natural micro-expressions remained absolutely flawless, projecting a restrained, cinematic calmness that completely unnerved the people staring at her.

For a year, Claire had played the role of a struggling freelance consultant. She drove a modest car, rented a small apartment, and never asked Ethan for a single dime. She had hidden her true identity because she wanted to find a man who loved her for her heart, not her bank account.

Instead, she had found a narcissistic monster.

Claire gracefully lifted her own champagne glass. She didn't scream. She didn't throw her drink. Her slow, steady eye movements locked directly onto Ethan’s confused face. She showed absolutely zero fear.

"Smart decision," Claire replied, her voice soft, steady, and chillingly composed.

👉 Ethan’s nervous frown deepened, totally oblivious to the fact that his fiancée was a multi-millionaire apex predator.
