Chapter 9 - The Financial Guillotine

"Claire, please!" Ethan wailed, completely abandoning his arrogant facade. He scrambled toward her, his hands shaking violently. "We're getting married on Saturday! We are a team! This company is marital property! We can rule it together!"

Claire smiled. It was the exact same chillingly confident smile she had given him at their engagement dinner.

She opened her black leather folder and pulled out a thick legal document.

It was the prenuptial agreement Ethan had forced her to sign.

"I believe your exact words were, 'What's mine stays mine, and what's yours stays yours,'" Claire quoted perfectly, her voice a cold, quiet blade cutting through the silent boardroom. "According to the ironclad contract you demanded, you have absolutely zero claim to my assets. And since my assets now include this entire company, you have absolutely nothing."

The cinematic realism of the absolute, crushing justice paralyzed everyone in the room.

"No! You can't do this!" Ethan sobbed, tears ruining his handsome face as the reality of his total bankruptcy crushed his soul.

"You are terminated, Ethan," Claire stated clinically. "Effective immediately. My forensic accountants have already forwarded your fraudulent expense reports to the SEC. You will be facing federal embezzlement charges by Friday."
