Chapter 2 - The Silent Plea

Rhett’s dark eyes scanned the wreckage of the modest kitchen.
He noticed the deep, dark purple bruises forming around Isa’s delicate wrists. He saw the faint smears of blood on the cheap linoleum floor. His sharp, masculine jawline locked so tightly the muscles ticked beneath his trimmed stubble.
His expression shifted from concerned employer to terrifying, lethal predator.
Isa whimpered, trying desperately to pull her injured arm closer to her body, terrified he would touch the broken bone. Rhett didn't pull away. He carefully, flawlessly supported her uninjured shoulder, ensuring he didn't cause her any more pain.
"Who did this?" Rhett demanded. His deep voice vibrated with a dark, freezing promise of extreme violence.
Isa shook her head frantically, tears spilling down her bruised cheek. She was entirely terrified that the monster she had escaped would return to finish the job.
Rhett didn't push her. He reached into the inner pocket of his tailored black suit and pulled out his encrypted smartphone, fully intending to summon the police and an ambulance to lock down the entire building.
Suddenly, Isa lurched forward.
She caught his thick, tattooed wrist with her uninjured hand. Her grip was incredibly tight and violently shaking.
"Please," Isa choked out, her voice cracking with raw panic. "No police. If they arrest him, he'll post bail by tomorrow. He'll kill me."

Rhett stopped immediately. He met her frightened, desperate eyes. He nodded once, understanding the horrifying reality of the legal system, and dialed his private, off-the-books doctor instead.
👉 Before the doctor could even answer, a chilling sound from the hallway made Isa stop breathing.
