Chapter 4 - The Stunned Recognition

The metal key began turning slowly in the lock.

Rhett Valin, the most feared mafia boss in Chicago, slowly rose to his full, imposing height. He stepped flawlessly between Isa and the apartment door, completely shielding her broken body with his broad, tailored shoulders.

His expression had violently changed from protective anger to stunned, apocalyptic recognition.

He looked back down at the terrified housekeeper shivering in his black coat.

"Why didn't you tell me he was your husband?" Rhett asked, his deep voice thick with absolute disbelief.

Isa stared up at him, her heart hammering violently against her ribs. Her expressive brown eyes widened in sheer, unadulterated terror as the terrifying reality crashed over her.

Rhett knew the man outside.

"You... you know him?" Isa stammered, scrambling backward on the kitchen floor. She had spent fourteen months working for Rhett under her maiden name, desperately hiding her abusive marriage, terrified the powerful billionaire would fire her for bringing drama into his estate.

"I know him," Rhett whispered, his dark eyes turning pitch black, completely devoid of any human mercy.

The brass door handle violently clicked. The deadbolt slid open.
