Chapter 2 - The Cruel Audience

The cinematic realism of the absolute disrespect hung heavy over the upscale restaurant.

Adam wasn't laughing alone. Sitting to his right was their younger sister, Vanessa.

Vanessa, wearing a trendy sage green designer dress, didn't reach down to help Claire. Instead, her eyes lit up with malicious excitement. She eagerly held up her smartphone, perfectly framing Claire’s humiliating moment for her thousands of social media followers.

"Adam, repeat that for the video!" Vanessa cheered eagerly, adjusting her camera angle to capture her older sister crawling on the floor.

Sitting at the head of the table was their mother.

Wearing an elegant light blue dress and heavy diamond jewelry, the sixty-year-old matriarch of the family didn't reprimand her children. She held a glass of expensive red wine, swirling it gently as she let out a cold, cruel laugh.

"Leave her be, Adam," their mother sneered condescendingly. "She spent all month saving her little receptionist pennies for that cheap watch. Let her pick up the trash."

On the floor, Claire’s hand finally closed around the broken silver dial of the watch.
