Chapter 3 - The Mirror Image

Preston took a slow, silent step backward, intending to slip out the glass door before Naomi could turn around and see him. He didn't want to face the ghost of his past.

But a medium close-up captured a moment of pure, undeniable cinematic realism.

Eli, the other four-year-old twin sitting in the stroller, looked up toward the bakery ceiling. Something caught his eye, and the little boy let out a sudden, bright laugh. As he laughed, Eli raised a single, distinct eyebrow in an incredibly specific, arrogant, and overwhelmingly familiar way.

A tight close-up captured Preston. All the color violently drained from his handsome face.

Preston recognized that exact facial micro-expression. He didn't just recognize it; he saw it in the mirror every single morning of his life. It was a genetic, undeniable trademark of the Vance family.

"They're mine..." Preston whispered, his deep voice barely audible, entirely stripped of his billionaire bravado.

The realization hit him with the force of a freight train. Naomi hadn't faked a pregnancy to steal his money. She had been carrying his children—identical twin boys—when he cruelly threw her out into the cold. And for the last four years, she had been raising his sons in absolute, crushing poverty while he lived in a massive, empty mansion.

Preston didn't approach her. He didn't scream or demand a paternity test.
