Chapter 5 - The Stolen Letters

Preston was sitting behind the massive mahogany desk in his towering corporate skyscraper when his private attorney, Martin, finally walked into the office.

Martin didn't look like a confident, highly-paid lawyer. He looked physically sick. He placed a thick, heavy manila folder directly onto the polished wood of the desk.

"I pulled her records, Preston," Martin said quietly. "It's worse than you could possibly imagine."

Preston opened the folder. The very first document was a verified, legal birth certificate for Eli and Theo Vance. Preston was listed as the father. But what caught his eye was the massive stack of unopened, returned letters resting beneath the certificate.

"What are these?" Preston demanded, his voice dropping into a dangerous register.

"Naomi wrote to you. Over forty times," Martin explained, his voice trembling. "She wrote to you when she was in the hospital, begging for help with the medical bills. She wrote to you when she was evicted from her apartment. She wrote to you when the twins needed winter coats."

Preston felt the air violently rush out of his lungs. "I never received a single letter."

"I know," Martin swallowed hard. "Because I traced the postal routing. Every single letter was intercepted by your mother’s private security detail and officially marked as 'Return to Sender.' Your mother knew about the twins, Preston. She intentionally kept Naomi in poverty to punish her."

The cinematic realism of the absolute, crushing betrayal paralyzed Preston.
