Chapter 9 - The Lobby Ambush

"Victoria! Open the door!" Julian roared, kicking the base of the heavy mahogany wood. "You can't lock me out of my own house! I have rights!"
Sina leaned against the hallway wall, rubbing her temples in sheer exhaustion. "Julian, stop screaming. Just call the building manager to let us in."
Julian pulled out his phone, his face red with unhinged fury. But before he could dial, the elevator doors at the end of the hallway chimed open.
Stepping out was the building's head of security, flanked by two towering, uniformed Chicago police officers.
"Mr. Julian Black," the police officer stated firmly, resting his hand on his utility belt. "Step away from the door and place your hands where I can see them."
Julian froze, his arrogant anger instantly melting into sheer, breathless terror. "Officers, there's a misunderstanding. My crazy wife locked me out of my apartment."
"You don't own this apartment, Julian," a cold, smooth voice echoed from inside the elevator.
Victoria stepped out from behind the officers. She looked breathtakingly elegant, wearing a flawless light beige silk blouse and tailored trousers. She didn't look like a heartbroken victim. She looked like an absolute queen who had just successfully checkmated her opponent.
