Chapter 1 - The Hospital Corridor

The brightly lit hospital corridor was a blinding, chaotic blur of sterile white walls and rushing medical personnel. The heavy double doors of the operating room loomed ominously at the end of the hall.
Claire, a beautiful woman in her early thirties, lay strapped to a moving medical gurney. She was wearing a thin, pale hospital gown, an oxygen mask strapped tightly over her face. Tears streamed continuously down her cheeks, pooling in her ears as the paramedics aggressively pushed her toward the emergency surgical suite.
Running frantically alongside the gurney was her husband, Grant.
Grant was in his late thirties, wearing a perfectly tailored dark suit. He looked like the picture of absolute, devastating heartbreak. He had just violently torn his hand away from Tessa—a stunning blonde woman in a red evening gown standing near the waiting area—to chase after his injured wife.
"Claire?!" Grant screamed, his face contorted in sheer, unadulterated panic.
A wide cinematic shot captured Grant aggressively stepping forward, desperately trying to grab the metal railing of the moving gurney. He completely ignored the paramedics trying to push him back.
"Get your hands off her! That’s my wife!" Grant roared, playing the role of the fiercely protective, devastated husband flawlessly.
He leaned directly over Claire, his dark hair falling into his eyes as he looked down at her battered, tear-stained face. He expected to see a terrified, vulnerable woman clinging to him for dear life.
Instead, a close-up captured Claire’s expression beneath the plastic oxygen mask. The tears were real, but her eyes were completely, terrifyingly calm.
"Don't," Claire whispered, her voice muffled but razor-sharp.
Grant froze, his panicked facade fracturing for a microsecond. "Don't what, baby?"
Claire reached up with her uninjured hand and violently ripped the oxygen mask off her face. Her eyes were completely devoid of human warmth.

"Pretend," Claire stated coldly.
👉 Grant physically recoiled from the gurney, entirely unaware that his wife had already signed his federal death warrant.
