Chapter 5 - The Master Override

The waiting room was suffocatingly quiet. Grant sat in a plastic chair, his leg bouncing aggressively as he held his smartphone to his ear.

"What do you mean you can't access the primary accounts?" Grant hissed into the phone, his face turning violently pale.

On the other end of the line, his highly paid corporate lawyer sounded completely panicked. "Grant, I don't know what's happening. The moment I tried to file the emergency medical conservatorship, the entire system locked me out. The primary corporate accounts, the joint checking, the offshore trusts—everything has been completely frozen by a master override."

Grant physically stopped breathing. The sterile air in the hospital suddenly felt incredibly thin.

"A master override?" Grant choked out. "That's impossible! Claire is in a coma in the OR! She doesn't have access to a computer!"

"It gets worse, Grant," the lawyer stammered, raw terror bleeding into his voice. "The master override wasn't just a freeze. It triggered an automatic, massive data dump directly to the federal authorities. They have every single encrypted text message you've sent for the last eight months."

Grant’s jaw literally unhinged. The phone slipped from his sweating fingers, clattering loudly against the hospital floor.

Tessa looked over at him, her arrogant smirk faltering as she saw the sheer, apocalyptic horror radiating from his face.
