Chapter 2 - The Padlocked Door

The cinematic tension in the filthy kitchen was absolutely paralyzing.
Hannah rushed forward, ignoring the garbage on the floor, and violently dropped to her knees. A tight, cinematic close-up captured Lily’s face. The four-year-old girl was clutching a dirty, empty cereal bowl. She had dark, heavy circles under her eyes, looking up at the woman in the army uniform.
"Mommy?" Lily whispered weakly, her tiny voice trembling with profound disbelief. "Is it really you? Daddy said you weren't coming back."
Hannah stopped breathing. The air in her lungs violently turned to absolute ice.
She burst into heavy, agonizing tears, wrapping her arms fiercely, desperately around her neglected daughter. "I'm here, baby," Hannah wept, holding the little girl against her camouflage uniform. "Mommy's right here. Where is Daddy?"
Lily didn't answer. She just buried her face in her mother's shoulder, completely traumatized.
Suddenly, a heavy, authoritative voice echoed from the hallway.
Officer Bell, a forty-something African American man wearing a dark blue police uniform, stepped into the kitchen. Hannah had called for a welfare check the second she saw the state of the front yard, and the officer had followed her inside.
Officer Bell wasn't looking at the garbage. He was looking at the white door leading to the basement stairs.
Securing the door handle was a massive, incredibly thick brass padlock.

"Ma'am," Officer Bell stated, his voice dropping into a serious, highly tactical register. "Why is there a heavy padlock on the basement door from the outside?"
