Chapter 4 - The Bolt Cutters

The cinematic realism of the moment crashed over the kitchen with the force of a nuclear bomb.

Officer Bell paused. He lowered the heavy steel bolt cutters slightly. A tight, cinematic close-up captured the intense eye contact between the seasoned police officer and the furious military mother. Without a warrant, Officer Bell technically needed the homeowner's permission to force entry into a locked interior room.

"Hannah, I swear to God!" Derek screamed hysterically over the phone. "If you open that door, they are going to arrest me! It's a misunderstanding!"

Hannah didn't cry. The absolute, terrifying restraint she showed was infinitely more dangerous than throwing a tantrum. She looked at her neglected, traumatized four-year-old daughter, and then she looked dead at the police officer.

"Open it, officer," Hannah commanded, her voice firm, angry, and ringing with absolute, undeniable authority.

Officer Bell nodded once. He stepped forward and clamped the heavy jaws of the bolt cutters directly over the thick brass padlock.

"NO!" Derek shrieked over the speakerphone, his voice cracking with absolute, horrifying despair. "HANNAH, STOP! YOU'RE GOING TO DESTROY EVERYTHING!"

SNAP.
