Chapter 7 - The Forged Blackmail

Diane frantically pulled a folded, wrinkled piece of paper from her cheap leather purse. She shoved it through the iron bars, waving it frantically in the bright sunlight.

"I still have the contract, Paige!" Diane shrieked hysterically, completely losing her mind. "I have the legal document proving you owe me fifty thousand dollars for your college tuition! I paid for your life! If you don't let us live here, I am taking this straight to a lawyer, and I will sue you for half of this estate!"

Mallory nodded fiercely, crossing her arms with a smug, victorious glare. "That's right! You legally owe Mom! You have to pay up or let us in!"

A tight close-up captured Paige’s face. She didn't look scared. She looked absolutely, profoundly disgusted.

Paige took a slow step forward, safely behind her dogs, and looked at the wrinkled paper waving in her mother's hand.

It wasn't a tuition contract.

Paige immediately recognized the faded blue bank logo at the top of the page. It was the original withdrawal slip from twelve years ago. The exact slip Diane and Mallory had used to completely drain her grandmother's trust fund. Diane had kept it as some twisted trophy, believing she could gaslight Paige into thinking it was a loan document.

"You really shouldn't have brought that here, Diane," Paige whispered lethally.

"I'll destroy you!" Diane screamed, shaking the paper. "I'll take everything you have!"

"No," Paige replied smoothly, reaching into the pocket of her black leggings. "You just handed me the final piece of evidence I needed."
