Chapter 1 - The Kitchen Assault

The sharp, stinging slap echoed through the pristine kitchen like a gunshot.
My cheek burned instantly, a hot, spreading red mark forming under my skin. I stood completely still, my hand resting on the edge of the stainless-steel sink. The kitchen trash can beside me was full of four pounds of premium, slow-roasted beef short ribs that I had just scraped directly into the garbage.
“What the hell am I supposed to eat?!” Patricia, my mother-in-law, screamed at the top of her lungs.
Her face was twisted into a mask of ugly, unadulterated entitlement. She raised her hand, fully preparing to strike me across the face a second time.
I didn't cower. I reached out with lightning speed and caught her wrist in mid-air. I gripped her bone so tightly that her cruel, arrogant sneer instantly faltered.
“That,” I whispered, my voice radiating a cold, cinematic calm, “is exactly what I've been wondering for the last three years.”
Standing in the kitchen doorway, holding a glass of whiskey, was my husband, Garrison.
He had watched his mother violently assault me. He didn't drop his glass. He didn't run forward to protect me. He simply stood there, wearing a tailored shirt I had paid for, looking deeply annoyed by the noise. He didn't defend me. He never did.
Garrison let out a heavy sigh, as if my physical assault was nothing more than a minor inconvenience to his evening.
"Seraphina, apologize to Mom," Garrison demanded coldly. "You're embarrassing everyone."

I slowly let go of Patricia's wrist. I looked at the man I had married, realizing that the vows we took meant absolutely nothing.
👉 Garrison thought he was putting a hysterical wife in her place, but he had no idea I was about to reach for my phone.
