Chapter 4 - The Grand Illusion

"You're a psychotic bitch!" Patricia shrieked, clutching her chest as if she were the victim of a violent crime.

Garrison stepped further into the kitchen, his handsome face twisted with absolute disgust. He looked at the meat in the trash, then glared at me.

"Do you have any idea how hard my mother worked to organize this party?" Garrison yelled, completely rewriting reality to protect his family. "You ruined my promotion dinner because you're jealous of Lydia's new business! Now go outside, apologize to my family, and order twenty pizzas on your card."

The sheer, suffocating audacity of his words paralyzed me for a fraction of a second.

He honestly believed he was the king of the castle. He believed his family was royalty, and I was just the emotional punching bag required to fund their lifestyle.

Outside, the doorbell began to ring. The twenty extended relatives were arriving.

Patricia immediately adjusted her pearl necklace, her fake, high-society smile snapping back into place. "I will handle the guests," she sneered at me. "I will tell them that Garrison's wife had a hysterical breakdown. Garrison, darling, go pour your uncles some scotch in your beautiful living room."

"Of course, Mom," Garrison sighed, turning his back on me completely.

They walked out of the kitchen, ready to play the perfect, wealthy family hosting a party in their sprawling suburban estate.
