Chapter 9 - The Eviction

The silence in the living room was apocalyptic. The relatives who had been laughing and drinking minutes ago were now quietly setting their glasses down and backing toward the front door, desperate to escape the fallout of the criminal fraud.

"Seraphina, baby, please," Garrison begged, tears of pure, humiliating terror streaming down his handsome face. He dropped to his knees right in front of the coffee table. "I was desperate! Lydia was in debt! I was going to pay it back! Don't do this!"

"You watched your mother strike me in the face, and you told me to apologize," I whispered, the lethal edge in my voice making him flinch. "You don't know what desperation is yet."

I turned to Patricia, who was hyperventilating by the fireplace.

"Get out of my house," I commanded.

"You can't do this!" Patricia shrieked hysterically. "We're your family!"

"You're a parasite," I corrected. I looked down at Garrison kneeling on the rug. "You have exactly ten minutes to pack a single suitcase. If you, your mother, or your thieving sister are still on my property when the timer goes off, I am handing these forged loan documents directly to the police."

Garrison sobbed violently. He knew I wasn't bluffing. He scrambled to his feet and ran up the stairs to grab whatever clothes he could carry.

Lydia burst into tears, realizing her catered party across town was the only thing she had left in the world.
