Chapter 1 - The Empty Driveway

“Emily, why did you arrive in an Uber?” Aunt Clara asked, her voice carrying across the elegant dinner table. “Where is the silver crossover I bought you?”
Before I could even open my mouth, my mother smiled, delicately cutting her steak.
“Her brother needed it more,” my mom said, not even looking up from her plate.
The entire table went dead silent. The clinking of silverware stopped.
I lowered my eyes, my face burning with humiliation as I fought back a sudden wave of hot tears. I was twenty-nine years old, a pediatric nurse working grueling 12-hour night shifts in Ohio, and I had spent my entire life being treated like the least important person in my own family.
Three months ago, Aunt Clara had surprised me with that beautiful silver crossover. She had visited my small apartment and realized I was taking two different city buses just to get to the hospital at 3:00 AM.
“You’ve worked hard enough, sweetheart,” Clara had said, pressing the keys into my hand. “You deserve something safe and reliable.”
For the first time in my life, I felt seen. I felt valued.
But my family had a different golden child. My older brother, Jason.
At thirty-four, Jason had abandoned two businesses, racked up enormous debts, and somehow convinced our parents that every single one of his disasters was society’s fault. He was a grown man who refused to work, yet my parents treated him like royalty.
Aunt Clara slowly placed her fork down on the expensive tablecloth. Her eyes narrowed into dangerous slits.
