Chapter 10 - Justice Served

“Jason Carter, you are under arrest for grand theft auto,” the officer announced, aggressively spinning my brother around and snapping cold steel handcuffs onto his wrists.

“Mom! Dad! Do something!” Jason screamed hysterically, thrashing against the officers as they dragged him through the crowded restaurant.

My mother collapsed into her chair, sobbing uncontrollably. My father just sat there, completely paralyzed by the destruction of his precious golden boy.

Aunt Clara calmly gathered the bank statements and placed them back into the manila folder.

“I’ll be sending these copies to my lawyer in the morning,” Clara told my parents, her voice devoid of any pity. “Emily will be suing you for the full $250,000 you stole, plus interest. If you don't pay it back, I will personally ensure the DA presses criminal charges for wire fraud and identity theft. Enjoy your dinner.”

Clara wrapped her arm around my shoulders, and together, we walked out of the restaurant, leaving my toxic parents entirely alone with the ruin they had created.

The crisp night air felt amazing. For the first time in my adult life, the crushing weight on my chest was completely gone.

Jason was denied bail. He is currently awaiting trial for grand theft auto. My parents, terrified of going to federal prison for fraud, were forced to completely liquidate their retirement accounts and sell their home to pay back every single penny of my stolen trust fund.

I moved to a beautiful new city, bought a gorgeous house close to a new hospital, and I never have to take the bus again. I drive my silver crossover every single day.

Do you think Emily was right to press charges and sue her parents, or should she have forgiven them because they are family?
