Chapter 2 - The Stolen Key

My mother let out a nervous, dismissive laugh. “Oh, Clara, it’s just a family arrangement. Jason’s old truck broke down, and he has a family to think about. Emily is single. She doesn't need something that nice.”
“That wasn't my question,” Clara snapped, her tone turning to absolute ice. She looked directly at me. “Emily. Did you agree to this?”
I stared at my plate, my hands trembling in my lap. “No,” I whispered, my voice shaking. “I didn't.”
Two weeks before this dinner, my mother had shown up unannounced at my apartment. She demanded I hand over my keys because Jason "needed a reliable vehicle for job interviews."
I refused. I told her I worked night shifts at the pediatric ward and needed my car to get home safely. She became furious, calling me a selfish, ungrateful daughter. She stormed out.
But my mother didn't give up.
Three days later, while I was saving a child’s life in the ICU, Jason walked right up to the hospital parking lot. My mother had secretly pocketed my spare key from my kitchen counter during her angry visit.
When I finished my exhausting 12-hour shift and walked out into the freezing Ohio morning, my beautiful silver crossover was gone. My parking space was completely empty.
When I called my parents in a panic, my father just sighed into the phone. “Stop being dramatic, Emily. Jason grabbed it. Just take the bus. Your brother needs a break right now.”
