Chapter 3 - The Silent Trap

Sitting at Aunt Clara’s birthday dinner, my mother continued to chew her food, completely unbothered by the devastation she had caused me.
She didn't know that the silver crossover was legally registered in my name, and my name only.
She also didn't know that the morning I walked out of the hospital to find an empty parking space, I didn't just cry. I called the police.
I had officially filed a police report documenting the unauthorized removal of a motor vehicle. The officer had told me that since I knew exactly who had it, I could press charges for grand theft auto immediately.
But a small, pathetic part of me still wanted my family’s love. I told the police I wanted to hold off on a formal arrest warrant for two weeks. I wanted to give my parents one final opportunity to do the right thing and return my property voluntarily.
Now, sitting at this table, hearing my mother brag about giving my hard-earned gift to my deadbeat brother, that pathetic part of me completely died.
Aunt Clara stood up from her chair. The expensive mahogany chair scraped loudly against the hardwood floor.
She pulled her cell phone out of her designer purse and dialed a number, putting it on speakerphone for the entire table to hear.
“Hello?” Jason’s lazy, arrogant voice echoed from the phone.
“Jason,” Clara said coldly, radiating absolute authority. “You have exactly thirty minutes to bring Emily’s car to this restaurant.”
My mother gasped, dropping her napkin. “Clara! What are you doing?!”
