Chapter 4 - The Ultimatum

“Thirty minutes, Jason,” Clara repeated, staring dead into my mother’s pale face. “Or I am personally calling the police.”
“Whoa, Aunt Clara, chill out!” Jason scoffed through the speaker. “It’s just a car. Mom said Emily wasn't even using it that much. Besides, I’m out with the guys right now. Tell Emily to catch a cab.”
“Twenty-nine minutes,” Clara said, and hung up the phone.
My mother slammed her hands on the table, her face turning bright red. “Clara! You are completely overreacting! This is none of your business. We are her parents, and we decide how family resources are shared!”
“Family resources?” Clara laughed, a harsh, bitter sound that made my father flinch. “I bought that car with my own money. I titled it in Emily’s name. You stole a spare key and gave it to a thirty-four-year-old failure who has never worked a hard day in his life.”
“Jason is going through a tough time!” my mother shrieked, defending her golden boy. “He has potential! Emily just wipes noses at a hospital all day. She owes him!”
“She owes him absolutely nothing,” Clara fired back, her eyes blazing with a fury I had never seen before.
Clara reached down into her large leather tote bag.

“And since we are on the topic of what Emily owes this family,” Clara said, her voice dropping to a dangerous, lethal whisper, “after Jason gets here, we are going to discuss everything else you’ve taken from this poor girl.”
