Chapter 6 - The Manila Folder

Jason rolled his eyes and slumped into an empty chair next to my mother, crossing his arms like a petulant teenager. “What now? Are you going to lecture me about getting a job again? Because I’m actually an entrepreneur, Clara.”

“You’re a parasite,” Clara stated bluntly.

My father finally spoke up, his voice shaking. “Clara, please. Let’s not do this in public.”

“No,” Clara said, opening the manila folder. “We are doing this right here, right now. Because for ten years, I watched Emily struggle. I watched her take out massive student loans. I watched her live in a tiny, freezing apartment and eat ramen noodles while working night shifts.”

Clara pulled out a stack of highlighted bank statements and legal documents, spreading them across the white tablecloth.

“And I always wondered,” Clara continued, her voice trembling with rage, “why Emily was so broke. Because when my parents—your grandparents, Emily—passed away, they left a very specific trust fund.”

My heart skipped a beat. I leaned forward, staring at the papers. “A trust fund?” I whispered.

“Yes,” Clara looked at me, her eyes softening with deep, profound pity. “They left a $250,000 education and housing trust entirely in your name, Emily. Jason got his inheritance early and blew it on his first failed business. This money was strictly for you.”

My jaw dropped. Two hundred and fifty thousand dollars. That money would have paid off my nursing school debt instantly. It would have bought me a beautiful home. It would have saved me from years of brutal, soul-crushing poverty.

“Mom?” I choked out, looking across the table. “Is this true?”
