Chapter 7 - The Forged Signatures

“Where did you get those files, Clara?” my father demanded, his voice cracking with pure panic as he tried to grab the papers.

Clara slapped his hand away violently. “I am the executor of the estate, you idiot! I requested a full audit last week when I realized Emily was still taking the bus! Do you want to explain to your daughter how her bank accounts were drained, or should I?”

Silence slammed back into the room. Jason suddenly looked very interested in the ceiling, refusing to look at me.

“They forged your signature, Emily,” Clara revealed, her voice echoing in the quiet restaurant. “When you turned eighteen, they created a joint account, transferred the trust money into it, and systematically drained $250,000 over five years.”

I felt physically sick. My vision blurred. “Where did it go?”

Clara pointed a sharp, accusing finger directly at my brother. “It went to him. To fund his ridiculous ‘startup’ companies. To pay off his gambling debts. To buy his expensive clothes.”

I stared at my parents. The people who were supposed to protect me had literally stolen my future to fund my brother’s delusions. Every time I had cried on the phone to my mother about my crushing student loan payments, she had been sitting on my stolen fortune.

“Emily, you have to understand!” my mother suddenly cried out, completely dropping her smug attitude. “Jason is a man! He’s the head of his household! He needed capital to get his life started!”
