Chapter 1 - The Single Gift

The warm morning light spilled across the family living room in Pittsburgh, reflecting off the glittering ornaments on the massive Christmas tree. The smell of fresh pine branches and warm cinnamon rolls filled the air. It was supposed to be a morning of joy, but for 11-year-old Natalie, it was a quiet, suffocating lesson in exactly where she stood in her own home.

Natalie sat on the floor beside the tree, her shoulder-length brown hair falling softly over her pale-blue pajamas. Resting in her lap was her only Christmas present: a tiny red box. Inside lay a single pair of thin, gray snowflake socks.

Three feet away sat her 12-year-old stepbrother, Mason. Dressed in navy pajamas, Mason was completely surrounded by a mountain of torn, expensive wrapping paper. He had already opened twelve large gifts. Beside him sat brand-new premium headphones, limited-edition sneakers, and a top-of-the-line gaming console.

Natalie looked down at her gray socks. She didn't cry. She didn't throw a tantrum. She was too used to this treatment. She quietly lifted the socks from the box, stealing a quick, heartbroken glance at Mason’s massive pile of expensive electronics.
