Chapter 6 - The Brother's Confession

"I didn't steal anything!" Dana shrieked, backing away toward the kitchen door. The elegant, confident stepmother was now a cornered, desperate animal. "I am managing this household! Your mother has no right to audit my spending! I bought Mason what he deserved for getting good grades!"
The room was completely silent, save for the hum of the Christmas tree lights.
Then, a small, shaky voice broke the tension.
"Mom... you didn't buy this with your money," Mason said quietly.
Dana whipped her head around, glaring at her own son. "Mason, shut your mouth right now!"
But Mason didn't stop. The 12-year-old boy looked at his brand-new gaming console, then looked at the cheap gray socks in his stepsister's lap. He felt genuinely sick to his stomach.
"I saw her doing it last week, Adam," Mason confessed, his voice trembling as he looked at his stepfather. "Mom didn't just use the money from Grandma Ruth. She logged into your computer while you were at work. She took money out of Natalie’s college savings account to buy my sneakers and the headphones."
