Chapter 3 - The Missing Tablet

Grandmother Ruth sat stiffly on the velvet sofa. In her early 70s, with elegant silver hair and a sharp burgundy cardigan, Ruth was a woman who missed absolutely nothing.
For the past twenty minutes, Ruth had watched in silence as Mason unwrapped hundreds of dollars' worth of electronics while her own granddaughter was handed a cheap pair of pharmacy socks. Ruth’s attentive expression had slowly shifted into something much more dangerous: absolute, calculated concern.
Ruth looked at the gray socks in Natalie’s lap. Then, she looked at the towering pile of empty boxes surrounding Mason.
Slowly, deliberately, Ruth reached up and removed her reading glasses. The soft, festive atmosphere in the room instantly evaporated, replaced by a heavy, suffocating tension.
Ruth locked her piercing gaze directly onto Dana.
