Chapter 8 - The Great Return

"Mason," Adam said gently, his anger entirely vanishing as he spoke to the frightened boy. "I am not mad at you. None of this is your fault."

Adam reached down and picked up the massive gaming console box. Then he picked up the premium headphones and the limited-edition sneakers. He stacked them all into a massive, heavy pile in his arms.

"Adam, what are you doing?!" Dana cried out, rushing forward to grab the boxes. "You can't take those away from him! It's Christmas morning!"

"I'm returning all of it," Adam stated, walking right past her toward the front door. "Tomorrow morning, when the stores open, every single one of these items is going back. The refunds are going straight back into Natalie’s college fund, and the four hundred dollars is going back to my mother."

Dana fell to her knees on the living room rug, sobbing hysterically. Her perfect, wealthy facade was completely destroyed.

"And as for you," Adam said, pausing with his hand on the front doorknob. He didn't even look over his shoulder at the woman he had married. "Pack a bag. You are going to stay at your sister's house tonight. We are calling a divorce lawyer on Monday."
