Chapter 4 - The Poisoned Betrayal

Vincent placed the heavy black lockbox on Clara’s small wooden dresser.
He didn't ask for a key. He wrapped his massive hand around the cheap metal latch and effortlessly, violently snapped it entirely off its hinges. He opened the lid.
Sitting inside the box were two items. The first was a thick, leather-bound black ledger. The second was a small, velvet-lined case containing five tiny glass vials filled with a clear, odorless liquid.
Vincent’s jaw locked. He opened the ledger, his sharp eyes scanning the handwritten columns of numbers and offshore routing codes.
"He's been skimming from the family," Vincent deduced coldly. "Millions of dollars diverted into shadow accounts in the Cayman Islands."
"Yes, sir," Clara wept softly, clutching her daughter. "He forced me to receive the mail drops. He said nobody would ever suspect the maid's quarters for the missing money."
Vincent looked at the glass vials. A dark, terrifying realization washed over his ruggedly handsome face. "And what are these?"
Clara squeezed her eyes shut, tears streaming down her pale cheeks.
"It's digitalis, sir. A concentrated, lethal cardiac paralytic," Clara choked out, the absolute horror of her confession filling the tiny room. "Three months ago, your brother ordered me to put exactly two drops into your evening wine every single night. He said it would cause a slow, untraceable heart failure. He wanted to take your throne without starting a cartel war."
Vincent completely froze. The cinematic realism of his profound, suffocating shock was breathtaking. His own brother, his own blood, had meticulously planned his slow, agonizing murder.
