Chapter 8 - The Third Wish

The chaotic, violent energy completely evaporated from the massive luxury mansion.
Vincent picked up the third gold coin from the table. He walked quietly back down the hallway and gently pushed open the door to the servant's quarters.
Clara was sitting on the edge of the small twin bed, holding Ellie in her lap. When Vincent walked in, the cold, terrifying mafia executioner was completely gone. He looked incredibly human, deeply exhausted, and overwhelmingly grateful.
Vincent knelt down in front of the little girl. He held out his large, tattooed hand, revealing the final piece of gold resting in his palm.
"You still have one wish left, Ellie," Vincent smiled softly. "What is your third wish?"
Ellie looked at the shiny gold coin. Then, she looked up at the towering, intimidating man who had just saved them. She didn't take the coin. Instead, she reached out her tiny arms and wrapped them tightly around Vincent’s massive neck.
"I wish we could stay with you," Ellie whispered innocently. "So Mommy never has to be scared again."
Vincent’s chest tightened with a fierce, protective warmth he hadn't felt in over a decade. He gently hugged the little girl back, closing his eyes as a profound sense of peace finally washed over his soul.
He slowly pulled back and looked up at Clara.
The young mother was weeping silently, expecting to be told to pack her bags and leave for her own safety. She assumed a mafia boss would never keep a vulnerability so close to his heart.
