Chapter 2 - The Sound in the Wall

David knelt on the hardwood floor, placing a gentle hand on Lily’s tiny shoulder. He looked at the plate in her hands, then back at the blank white wall of the cabinet.
"Who gets hungry, sweetheart?" David asked, his brow furrowing in confusion. "There's no one in there. That's just the old utility closet."
Lily shook her head stubbornly. Her blonde curls bounced against her pink cardigan. She reached out and placed the small plate with the cut sandwich directly on the floor, sliding it right up against the bottom gap of the white cabinet door.
"She's crying," Lily insisted quietly.
David’s realistic facial micro-expressions shifted from gentle amusement to a sudden, creeping unease. He looked at the white wood. The mansion had thick, soundproofed walls, and the HVAC system was currently off. The hallway was dead silent.
Driven by a sudden, inexplicable instinct, David leaned forward. He pressed his ear flat against the cold, smooth surface of the white cabinet wall, listening closely.
For a second, there was nothing.
Then, he heard it.
It wasn't the scurrying of a mouse or the hum of a pipe. It was a faint, frantic scratching sound. Fingers scraping against the interior wood. And beneath the scratching, David heard the unmistakable, ragged sound of terrified, human breathing.

👉 David was about to pull the door open, completely unprepared for the living nightmare trapped in the dark.
