Chapter 7 - The Toddler’s Truth

Sarah stumbled backward, her beige blouse suddenly drenched in a cold, terrified sweat.

"David!" Sarah cried out, her voice pitching up in a frantic, chaotic panic. "A kidnapper! A squatter must have snuck into the house and hidden her here! We have to call the police right now! Step away from her, she might be dangerous!"

Sarah took a step toward the cabinet, reaching her hand out as if to pull David away.

The second Sarah’s shadow fell across the open doorway, Mia let out a blood-curdling shriek of pure, unadulterated terror. The little girl violently scrambled backward, pressing herself flat against the back wall of the closet, shielding her face with her dirty hands to protect herself from a beating.

David froze. The child hadn't flinched from him. She flinched from Sarah.

Before Sarah could utter another pathetic lie, little Lily looked up at her mother. The toddler in the floral dress pointed a small finger at the white cabinet.

"But Mommy," Lily said, her innocent, natural voice echoing loudly in the silent hallway. "You told me if I ever unlocked the white door, the monster would eat me. You said I could only slide the food under the crack when you went to sleep."
