Chapter 3 - The Hidden Prisoner

Adrenaline violently hijacked David's exhausted body. He grabbed the sleek metal handle of the white cabinet and yanked backward with every ounce of strength he possessed.
The heavy door swung open, the hinges groaning loudly in the quiet hallway.
The space inside wasn't a standard closet. It was a deep, cramped, unventilated service crawlspace that plunged into absolute darkness. A horrifying stench of stale air and sheer panic immediately hit David's face.
As his eyes adjusted to the shadows, the horrific truth revealed itself.
Cowering in the farthest, darkest corner of the cramped space was a child.
It was a little girl, maybe seven or eight years old. She was shivering violently, her knees pulled tight to her chest. She was covered in layers of dirt and grime, her once-bright clothes reduced to nothing but torn, filthy rags. Her messy dark hair hung in matted clumps over her face, obscuring her features.
Surrounding her on the cold floor were dozens of empty, crumpled food wrappers—the desperate remnants of whatever scraps she had been fed in the dark.
The little girl flinched violently when the light hit her, pressing her back harder against the wall as if expecting to be beaten.
