Chapter 5 - The Ghost From the Past

The little girl in the torn, dirty clothes didn't move toward his hands immediately. She trembled like a trapped animal, her breathing rapid and shallow.
She slowly lifted her head. The matted, messy dark hair parted just enough to reveal a face completely smeared with dirt and dried tears. She looked past David's extended hands. Her wide, terrified eyes locked directly onto the face of the man wearing the dark suit and dark blue shirt.
A profound, impossible recognition flashed across her realistic facial micro-expressions.
Slowly, agonizingly, the hidden child reached her tiny, trembling hand out from the dark closet. Her dirty fingers grazed the fabric of David's expensive suit sleeve.
She looked directly into his eyes, her lips parting in a breathless, broken whisper.
"Daddy?"
The single word hit David with the kinetic force of a freight train. The entire hallway started spinning. His dark eyes widened in absolute, unfiltered cinematic horror. He stared at the dirt-streaked face, the shape of her eyes, the familiar curve of her jaw hidden beneath the grime.
It was Mia.
